A healthy individual is a fit individual. And a fit individual is good for any business. Contrary to general perception, the benefits of exercising far transcend physical fitness and appearance. Working it out in the gym also invigorates your mind, which shows in your work. If you don’t work out enough, the long working hours synonymous with entrepreneurship can take their toll on your body. If you are still not convinced about fitting gym training into your schedule, read on to learn more.
Reduces Stress
Physical activity brings down your cortisol levels and boosts the secretion of endorphins – the brain chemicals that decrease discomfort and augment feelings of well-being and reward. Whether you work out early in the morning or at night, physical training has a calming effect on your mind, which will help you make better and more thoughtful business decisions. Over time, your cortisol and adrenaline levels will come down, helping you become better at man-management too.
Increases Energy Levels
Exercise boosts stamina and reduces fatigue, besides promoting a focused, calm state of mind. Exercising may sound energy-sapping and exhausting. But only 20 minutes of moderate-to-low intensity exercise, such as treadmilling, could increase your energy by 20 percent and reduce weariness by 65 percent.
Boosts Your Creativity
Exercising also helps your brain function at optimal levels. According to a study carried out by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise not only gets your sweat glands and heart pumping but it also increases the size of your hippocampus. The hippocampus is a part of the brain involved in learning and verbal memory. Several studies also suggest that the brain’s medial temporal cortex and prefrontal cortex, which control memory and thinking, have a larger footprint in individuals who exercise to a schedule. This is because physical activity battles inflammation and stimulates the production of fresh neurons.
Helps with Networking
Exercising in the gym or partaking in fitness programmes could help you meet potential business clients and investors and engage with them better. When meeting in a non-corporate environment, such as a gym, you get to know the non-business side of the person, which helps build new or strengthen existing relationships. In the gym, people are usually not as guarded and more open to real conversations compared to when they are all suited and prepared for a traditional business meeting or formal interaction.
